Identifying West Nile virus risk areas: the Dynamic Continuous-Area Space-Time system.

The Dynamic Continuous-Area Space-Time (DYCAST) system was developed to identify and prospectively monitor high-risk areas for West Nile virus in New York, New York (New York City). The system is based on a geographic model that uses a localized Knox test to capture the nonrandom space-time interaction of dead birds, as an indicator of an intense West Nile virus amplification cycle, within a 1....

Visualization of Space-Time Patterns of West Nile virus

A new technique for visualizing West Nile virus (WNV) activity is presented. Given a database of the space-time point locations of human WNV cases and a series of daily rasters representing modeled WNV risk areas, time slices are extracted from the rasters at the x, y location of the human onset. These time slices represent the “risk history” of a given geographic point. Juxtaposing risk histor...

Early Warning System for West Nile Virus Risk Areas, California, USA

The Dynamic Continuous-Area Space-Time (DYCAST) system is a biologically based spatiotemporal model that uses public reports of dead birds to identify areas at high risk for West Nile virus (WNV) transmission to humans. In 2005, during a statewide epidemic of WNV (880 cases), the California Department of Public Health prospectively implemented DYCAST over 32,517 km2 in California. Daily risk ma...

Protective Behavior and West Nile Virus Risk

We conducted a cross-sectional, household survey in Oakville, Ontario, where an outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2002 led to an unprecedented number of cases of meningitis and encephalitis. Practicing > or =2 personal protective behavior traits reduced the risk for WNV infection by half.

West Nile Virus, Guadeloupe

To determine whether West Nile virus (WNV) had reached the archipelago of Guadeloupe, a serologic study in horses and birds was conducted in 2002. Immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgM, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and seroneutralization tests identified WNV infection in horses and chickens. Six months later, a high rate of seroconversion was observed in horses.
